FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 23, 2009

RFD-TV STAR AND HORSE TRAINER JULIE GOODNIGHT IS THE LATEST SPONSOR OF THE INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL

CONTACT:  Kimberly E. Brown
859.223.2010
kimberly@horsecapitalproductions.com

Lexington, KY –
Best known for her award-winning reality television show Horse Master, airing weekly on RFD-TV,  trainer and clinician Julie Goodnight has signed on as an official sponsor of the International Equestrian Festival (IEF) and will present clinics daily in downtown Lexington, KY, September 25-October 10, 2010.  Horse Capital Productions, a Lexington-based company, is producing the event. Goodnight has prepared a full curriculum of horse training topics to cover and demonstrate daily as part of the Kentucky Horse Council’s First Time Owner seminar series to be held at IEF. She will also be on hand daily to answer questions and help horse lovers learn about her full line of tack, training DVDs, and wares in her extensive shopping area, “Goodnight Village,” which includes Kestar Boots and Circle Y Saddles, among others.

Horse Master with Julie Goodnight is a popular program airing on RFD-TV in which Goodnight helps horse owners to “makeover” their relationship with their horses and solve specific behavior and riding-related tasks.  During her 25-year career in the horse industry, she has developed expertise in multiple disciplines, including dressage, racing, jumping, reining, driving and colt-starting. She grew up riding on Florida’s hunter-jumper circuit then exercised race horses on the track while working through college in Arizona then stayed out West to lead wilderness rides and finally began combining all to form her unique brand of natural horsemanship and classic riding training.

In addition to her television work, Goodnight teaches numerous clinics ( focusing on “Classic Skills for a Natural Ride”) across the country, as well as writing columns that appear in many regional publications throughout North America. Goodnight’s training techniques are featured regularly in Horse & Rider (where she’s a member of Team Horse & Rider) and The Trail Rider.

Goodnight also serves as the International Spokesperson for the Certified Horse Association.  In 2008, she was named Equine Affaire’s Exceptional Equestrian Educator—one of only three to ever receive the award.

"We are excited to be a part of the expansion of the Julie Goodnight brand at the International Equestrian Festival. She is an icon in equestrian education and she has a massive fan following. With her educational techniques and the Goodnight Village on board, we know we have all the right tools to meet the goals of the ‘up and coming’ rider in a way they've never had access to before,” stated Anne Buchanan, CEO of Horse Capital Productions.

Goodnight will present daily during the 16-day festival.

“I’m really looking forward to working together with the IEF and the Kentucky Horse Council to offer educational programs to horse owners and to the diverse crowd of horse enthusiasts during the World Games,” Goodnight says. “It’s a unique opportunity and I am thrilled to be a part if it!

Horse Capital Productions also supports the Kentucky Horse Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated, through education, to the protection, growth and development of the equine industry in Kentucky.

RFD-TV invites you to celebrate the New Year

RFD-TV invites you to celebrate the New Year with our 3-hour live broadcast of both Equestfest and the 121st Pasadena Tournament of Roses ® Parade.

For the past 120 years horses and riders have been an integral part of the Parade. So, for over  12 years that the Tournament of Roses® has been showcasing the equestrians of the Rose Parade® in Equestfest, an all-equine event taking place before the parade on December 29 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, CA.  Known as “The best family equestrian event of the year,” Equestfest is like no other equestrian gathering with its trick riders and ropers, drill teams and a variety of other thrilling horseback demonstrations.

RFD-TV knows how you feel about horses and because we feel the same way, we are focusing our coverage of the 121st Tournament of Roses ®Rose Parade® on the horse entries. With limited commercial interruptions, we are committed to delivering complete coverage of the parade while diligently directing our attention to the fascinating groups of horses that have long been part of what makes the Rose Parade® an American tradition.

While other networks choose to cut away from the equine entries, we make sure all eyes are on our host, rodeo commentator and National Cowgirl Hall of Famer, Pam Minick. As the horse groups pass by, Minick will be there- front and center on the Parade route- providing “horse-focused commentary” to all of our viewers at home.

We want horse-owners and horse-lovers to be able to partake in all the action and by watching RFD-TV’s live coverage of Equestfest on December 29th and The Parade on New Year’s Day, so tune in for coverage that caters to you.

Merry Christmas!!!

In keeping with our holiday tradition, we got up early, Rich headed for work at the ski area before the sun was up, and I fed horses and made my special breakfast. After 15 years of hauling breakfast up the mountain, I have gotten pretty good at it, honing my timing and packaging so that I arrive at Rich's office, 15 miles away at 10,800 feet of altitude with the eggs and sweet rolls still steaming hot. Yum.
Maybe you're wondering what my special breakfast is? It is particularly delectable and surprisingly easy to make. And so stock full of calories that you are prohibited from eating it more than once a year. My special Christmas breakfast consists of three dishes: fruit salad, egg and ham cups and gooey sweet rolls. Recipes follow-- maybe you should make it for New Years Day!
Fruit salad: sectioned pink grapefruit (buy it in the jars to save a lot of hassle), sliced bananas and as many fresh berries as you can buy this time of year, preferably strawberries, blue berries and raspberries. I sprinkle on some Splenda or sugar to sweeten just a little.
Egg and ham cups: start with Honey Baked ham and line greased muffin cups with the ham. Then crack an egg in each hole, add a dab of butter and pepper and bake at 400* for about 15 minutes until the eggs are cooked to your desired hardness or softness.
Gooey sweet rolls: mix a stick of softened butter with about a cup of brown sugar and a touch of cinnamon. Open a package of refridgerator crescent rolls and knit all the seams of the dough together so you have one solid rectangle of dough. Spread butter/brown sugar mixture evenly over dough and roll it up from one end. Slice off about a 1" roll and place in a pan (fairly close together) and bake at 400* for about the same time as the egg and ham cups-- until golden brown. Remove from pan with a spatula so you get all the goo.
This traditional breakfast harkens back to my childhood and the big extended-family xmas breakfasts we had every year. It is a great meal for groups small and large and easy to serve. Normally I enjoy it with mimosas but having to drive up the pass to the ski area means I take my OJ straight up.
I would be less-than-honest if I said it was a beautiful day for skiing. It's below zero with a huge wind chill and blowing snow. I may opt out of skiing and head back home for some cozy time. Later today, Rich and I will go visit my son and take gifts and food and be thankful that we are all together this Christmas.
I hope you have some peace and quiet and happy times with friends and family this holiday season.
Enjoy the ride,
Julie

PONCHA SPRINGS, Colo. December 14, 2009— Have you ever had an ad drop out at the last moment—or a space that didn’t sell before printing deadline? Or has someone turned in a story that’s just a little too short? It’s Julie Goodnight and www.juliegoodnight.com to the rescue. Check out the newest addition to Goodnight’s online “Training Library” here and read more about training online (found with a quick link at the top of www.juliegoodnight.com <http://www.juliegoodnight.com> ). Goodnight—known for her clear communication in print and on her new RFD-TV show, Horse Master with Julie Goodnight—provides a tip each month for use when you, as an editor, need just a little more content or a great quip to fill out your magazine. Tips may be edited for style, length and content. Content is provided free of charge. Here’s a tip to help you when you’re in a layout crunch . . .

Keep your saddle pad in top shape
While hanging saddle pads upside down to dry and air out may keep your tack room from getting stinky, it does not do much for the shape of your pad. Your saddle pad needs to break-in and conform to the shape of your horse’s back. If you leave it to dry upside down, the pad is taking the opposite shape of how it will sit on the horse’s back. I use a saddle pad rack that will hold the pad in its ‘using’ shape and allow air to circulate underneath it. This way, the pad will keep its shape and be more comfortable for your horse.

Tips may be edited for style, length and content. Content is provided free of charge. Here’s a tip to help you when you’re in a layout crunch . . .

Tip for Clippers
There are many stimuli that can cause a horse to be anxious and fearful about the clippers—the sound, the smell, the vibration, even the cord laying on the ground like a snake. When desensitizing a horse to clippers, try to isolate each stimulus so that the horse can get used to them one at a time. For instance, if you have to use clippers with a cord, let him see and get comfortable with the cord moving on the ground before anything else. Then let him smell and feel the clippers before turning them on. Then let him get used to the sound of the clippers before he feels the vibrating touch. Be sure to only advance the stimulus so far—only as far as causes the horse to tense, then wait for the horse to relax, before removing the stimulus. By only removing the stimulus when the horse relaxes, you are training him to relax whenever he sees/hears/smells the clippers. If you remove the clippers while he is tensing—that’s what you are training him to do.

“Safety in Focus” Online Photo Contest Lets Equestrians Share Their Favorite Photographs

San Diego, CA – November 10, 2009 – Troxel LLC, the worldwide leader in ASTM/SEI-certified equestrian helmets, is now accepting submissions for its new “Safety in Focus” online photo contest. Judges will award prizes, including a grand prize of $250 worth of Troxel merchandise, to five winning photos and showcase all the best entries online.

The contest is in support of Troxel’s newly upgraded Safety Center website (http://www.troxelhelmets.com/safety <http://www.troxelhelmets.com/safety> ), the most comprehensive and up-to-date collection of equestrian helmet safety information available online. Featuring videos, tips from the pros, and interactive games for kids, the site is designed to engage equestrian riders, promote safe helmet practices and ultimately reduce the occurrences and severity of head injuries.

“The ‘Safety in Focus’ contest is a fun way to get the equestrian community thinking about head protection,” said Shay Timms, CEO of Troxel. "One of the basic issues of helmet usage revolves around fashion, and we are very excited to share – and show off – how great our customers look in action.”

The contest starts today, and runs until December 9, 2009. Winners will be chosen by December 16, 2009.

AHP Newsgroup: Equine Industry Survey Launched by American Horse Publications

Equine Industry Survey Launched by American Horse Publications

The American Horse Publications (AHP) is conducting an Equine Industry Survey to gauge participation trends in the U.S. equine industry. In addition, the survey seeks to gather information regarding the most important issues facing the industry.

Dr. C. Jill Stowe is providing consulting services for data collection and analysis to the AHP. Dr. Stowe is an assistant professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Kentucky.

The survey is sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health.

Those eligible to participate in the survey are men and women, 18 years of age and older, who currently own, manage, or lease at least one horse and live in the United States.

The survey closes January 15, 2010.

This study is anonymous; this means that no one, not even members of the research team, will be able to associate information you give with responses. When the survey results are tallied, only aggregated results will be presented.

“The AHP’s member publications, Web sites, and newsletters reach nearly 3 million people involved in the horse industry in the United States and around the world,” said Kimberly S. Brown, current AHP president. It was Brown who proposed the survey, which was backed unanimously by the AHP board.

“We have been through a rough year, and there are many stories out there of unwanted horses and the decline of the horse industry,” noted Brown. “But I think the real story is the wanted horses and their owners who are still strong despite the economic downturn.

“We think this is a great opportunity for us to use our collective resources and reach into the horse industry to get answers about how we are doing today, how we think we’ll be doing in the near future, and what we are concerned about in our industry.

“Let’s get 100,000 or more horse owners to participate in this survey!” said Brown. “We have a wonderful chance to come together to gather information that can benefit us all, so spread the word!”

“I especially want to thank Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health for sponsoring this survey,” said Brown. “Both of these companies—and the people behind the companies—are supporters of the horse industry because of their love of the horse, not just because it’s their business. And I want to thank Dr. Stowe for being willing to contribute her time and expertise to ensure we have a legitimate survey with accurate statistical analysis.”

PONCHA SPRINGS, Colo. October 14, 2009- After working with Circle Y Saddles (http://circley.com) for over a year to design saddles with the characteristics and qualities she demands, internationally-respected natural horsemanship trainer Julie Goodnight introduces five saddles in her Peak Performance line. The saddles are marked with Goodnight’s “jumping over the moon” logo and each allows for a close-contact feel, and has stirrups twisted to hang naturally in line with your leg, and has a flexible tree for your horse’s comfort. The saddles also boast a narrow twist and padded seat for comfort for you.
You’ll find a selection of wooden tree and Flex2® trees (known for their comfort and light weight). You’ll also find a specially designed saddle pad and tack to match each saddle. The saddles are available through Goodnight’s website at http://shop.juliegoodnight.com/shop/tackcircley.html, can be seen in her online catalog: http://www.juliegoodnight.com/images/2009catalog.pdf, and are available from your favorite Circle Y dealers.

“Whether you're looking for a working-cow horse saddle or a saddle that's comfortable enough to trail ride in each day, I trust that you’ll find the right fit within my signature line,” Goodnight says. “It was important for me to offer saddles that place the rider in the proper position while allowing for horse and rider comfort. I personally ride in the Rocky Mountain High Performance saddle when working cattle or participating in versatility classes. And you’ll see me ride in the Monarch Arena Performance/Trail at all of my clinics and expos. The other saddles have the same feel, but offer choices in skirting and riggings to match the kind of riding you do most.”

The Details:
Rocky Mountain High Performance (model #1470)
With a Kevlar reinforced wooden tree, this saddle has many high-performance features for the most demanding rider expecting the best from the horse. This all-around ranch saddle can be used for cutting, working cowhorse, roping and other western disciplines. It has a close-contact design for superior use of your aids, a narrow twist for your comfort and a rough-out skirt and fenders for better stick.

Monarch Arena Performance/Trail (model #1752)
This is Goodnight’s favorite saddle for every-day use; the Flex2 tree saddle has many special features designed by Goodnight to make your ride comfortable for both you and your horse while maintaining a high performance quality. For the rider who works both in the arena and on the trail, this saddle is the perfect multi-use saddle. With a narrow twist, extra padded seat and close-contact feel, you’ll never want to sit in another saddle. The highly adjustable rigging means this saddle will fit just about any horse securely and comfortably.

Wind River Trail (model #1750)
A Flex2 tree and rounded skirt makes this saddle ideal for serious trail riders who want comfort but still want to ride correctly and get the most out of their horse. With many of the features of the Monarch, this saddle is designed with the trail rider in mind—it’s lightweight (with a rounded skirt) and comfortable for the rider.

Blue Ridge Gaited Trail (model #1751)
With the same great design features of the Wind River Trail saddle, this saddle has a tree that is specially engineered to meet the unique needs of the gaited breeds while still offering the same great comfort and features of the rest of the entire Goodnight line.

Sierra Nevada Arena Performance (model #1560)
With a Flex2 tree for superior fit and comfort, this saddle is designed with the performance rider in mind. For horsemanship, pleasure and reining, this saddle will put you in the right spot and help you ride correctly to get the best performance from your horse.

Tips may be edited for style, length and content. Content is provided free of charge. Here's a tip to help you when you're in a layout crunch . . .

Split rein hold
Split reins are commonly used by western riders and there are several ways
to hold them-- the two-handed trainer's hold (with the reins bridged and
both reins in both hands), one-handed trainer's hold (reins bridged with
four fingers between the reins) and the proper split rein, like what is
required in competition. The split reins hold is sometimes called the
"pistol grip" and is easily taught to riders by having them make a pistol,
then grab the reins with the index finger between the reins.

Behavior Mod for Horses
Horses are creatures of habit and routine. Sometimes an unwanted behavior can become a bad habit after only one or two displays. Often riders are surprised by the first one or two times a horse acts up and they let the moment go without a correction; or worse, they inadvertently reward the behavior by letting the horse get what he wants. Remember, horses tend to be location specific in their behavior and this means that they will tend to act up in the same place or circumstance every time. As soon as you detect a problem, correct your horse firmly the first time so it doesn’t become a long-term problem.

SALIDA, Colo., September 17, 2009: The fall RFD-TV season kicks off with new Horse Master with Julie Goodnight episodes taped in Oregon City, Oregon and covering topics you want to see to help you with your horse life.

“Our shoot site, Tanz-Pferde Dressage Farms (www.tanz-pferde.com, the name means dancing horses) was a beautiful backdrop to shoot our fall shows,” Goodnight says. “We shot in their new outdoor arena and were surrounded by incredible trees—beautiful back drops in 360 degrees. With six really good episodes “in the can,” I have a few favorites, but all were topics that I have questions about at clinics and expos. We have episodes including stopping your horse from rearing on the trail, slowing a horse down for shows, loosening the reins to calm a jiggy horse, re-starting a horse in the round pen to help rectify his bossy behavior, helping a former brood mare learn a stop cue and learn to be a great riding mount, and helping a horse learn to pick up the correct lead. I think you’ll like them all and there’s beautiful country to see along the way!”

Horse Master’s RFD-TV episodes air every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. EST (with encores airing Thursday and Saturday nights) on Direct TV channel 345, Dish Network channel 231 as well as cable outlets. See the expanded schedule below.
