SALIDA, CO, February 6, 2012: It’s colt-starting month on Horse Master with Julie Goodnight—airing Monday night, Friday morning and Saturday night on RFD-TV (DirecTV 345, Dish 231). Starting this week, Goodnight works with a young horse (Picabo YC of Colorado’s Yarmony Creek Sport Horses) who had been trained well in the round pen and learned to lead respectfully by halter—and had even learned to understand bit pressure. The filly had never been ridden until the taping of the four shows to air February 2012.

Watch Horse Master every week in February 2012 for a new segment about colt starting. You’ll learn to introduce the horse to tack, make sure the horse is comfortable with the mounting process, teach the horse to accept a rider’s weight, and finally introduce the horse to cues from the rider. All the stages happen with little stress to the horse and without a buck! The colt-starting process—with proper preparation and Goodnight’s methods—can be a calm, stress-free process.

Week of February 5 HM506 “Born to Ride, Part 1” On Horse Master: teaching a colt to accept the pad and saddle for the first time.

Week of February 12 HM507 “Born to Ride, Part 2” On Horse Master: teaching a colt to accept a rider mounting and dismounting.

Week of February 19 HM508  “Born to Ride, Part 3” On Horse Master: teaching a colt to get used to the rider’s weight and move forward with the rider.

Week of February 26 HM509 “Born to Ride, Part 4” On Horse Master: teaching a colt the cues from the saddle for her first independent ride.

Pre-Release Special on New Colt-Starting DVD: Ready to Ride: Free Shipping!

Join Julie as she guides you through the colt-starting process. Shot over five days and with an amazing young filly who had been prepared with the methods taught on the previous DVDs in Goodnight’s training series, Round Pen Reasoning, Lead Line Leadership and Bit Basics, Julie shows you that colt starting doesn't have to be dramatic or scary. Broken down into steps you can understand and apply, you'll find this DVD a great resource as you train your horse!

“We chose the perfect filly for this DVD—she was properly prepared, her training progressed well, and she showed the typical reactions of a young horse starting under-saddle. I hope people will see from this video that when you take your time and use a systematic approach to training, colt-starting doesn’t have to be wild and traumatic,” says Goodnight.

This DVD is a thorough, step-by-step process for introducing a horse to the rider, once the horse has had round pen, lead line and bitting work (this is the fourth DVD in Goodnight’s From the Ground Up series and builds on the work shown in the previous DVDs). This video includes first saddling, first mounting, first ride and teaching cues to the horse. Approximately 2 hours.

Releases in March 2012. Regular price: $39.95.
