Certified Horsemanship Association is Awarded Colorado Horse Development Authority Grant

(January 2012) – The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) has been awarded a 2012 grant from the Colorado Horse Development Authority (CHDA). The CHDA Grant Program was created to help uphold the mission of the Colorado Horse Development Authority, "to promote and sustain the growth and development of the horse industry." The grant was awarded to CHA to conduct an advertising/marketing campaign to reach beginning riders, both youth and adult, in Colorado and be able to track their involvement during the year by having them take riding lessons at CHA Program Member equine facilities or from certified CHA Riding Instructor Members throughout the state.

“We are excited about this receiving this grant,” says Christy Landwehr Chief Executive Officer for CHA. “We feel that it will be a great way to spread the word about the sport of horseback riding to potential beginning riders in the state of Colorado through non-traditional advertising and then be able to track those riders’ progress and hopefully keep them involved in the horse industry for years to come.”

The purpose of CHA is to promote excellence in safety and education for the benefit of the horse industry. CHA certifies instructors and trail guides, accredits equestrian facilities, publishes educational manuals, produces educational horsemanship DVDs and hosts regional and international conferences. Certified Horsemanship Association Announces Winners at

2011 Awards Banquet

(November 2011) The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) honored top individuals, horses and organizations at the annual awards banquet held at the International Conference at The Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky on October 29, 2011.

Clinic Instructor of the Year is Terry Williams from Blanchester, Ohio

Without our clinic instructors CHA would not be able to grow and accomplish its mission. The CHA Clinic Instructor of the Year Award goes to a CHA clinic instructor who has shown outstanding service to CHA by conducting meaningful clinics and influencing the careers of numerous instructors over many years. Terry has been a CHA member since 1992 and a Clinic Instructor since 1996. She is CI for both CHA Standard (English and Western) and Equine Facility Manager Certification programs, as well as serving as a CHA Accreditation Site Visitor. She has served as the Regional Director for Region 4 for many, many years and has scheduled exception Regional Conferences. Terry also is an upcoming member of the CHA Board of Directors. Terry has certified and trained untold numbers of other Clinic Staff, including two previous winners of the Clinic Instructor of the Year Award.

“I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Terry has been selected as this year's Clinic Instructor of the Year,” says Jim Glunt – CHA Past President. “I have known her as a friend and co-worker for nearly twenty years. Her efforts are characterized by a strong work ethic and a thorough knowledge of the horse. She consistently puts the welfare of the student and the horse above her own. Hats off to you Terry!”

The CHA Partnership in Safety Award Goes to SaddleUp Safely – University of Kentucky HealthCare

For many years CHA has recognized an outstanding individual or organization that has helped not only the equine industry and CHA, but the community at large to promote safety and awareness. SaddleUp Safely is doing a lot in the local community and beyond to promote safe practices around horses. CHA has been very involved with this group helping them with educational brochures and answering questions on the blog that is open to all horse enthusiasts.

This award is given to an outstanding CHA certified instructor who demonstrates safe, effective and fun lessons. Students from around the continent send in nominations about their instructors and why they should be awarded this honor. AQHA Professional Horsemen, CHA Assistant Clinic Instructor, equine massage therapist – these are just a few of the titles that Megan holds.

“A good teacher makes a difference, a great teacher changes your life,” says Carole Marshall. “I didn’t trust myself or my horse, but I trusted Megan as my instructor. She has limitless patience, positive support, practical instruction and enthusiastic faith.”

“Her knowledge of rider biomechanics, horse conformation, training techniques and movement of the horse is so extensive it is staggering,” says Selene Doan. “Most importantly, she has the skills to pass along this information to those of us who want to learn!”

The CHA School Horse of the Year is APHA Gelding “Chewy” from Living Water Ranch in Fairbanks, Alaska

We often recognize people and organizations that have done great things in the horse industry, but what about the horses themselves? The CHA School Horse of the Year Program is about these wonderful animals that spend countless hours being patient with new riders and not-so-new riders. The winner of this award, not only gets recognition, but is immortalized into a Stone Horse model thanks to the generosity of Peter and Elaine Stone.

Imachutoo, known as “Chewy” around the Living Water Ranch in Fairbanks, Alaska, is a registered American Paint Horse gelding. He does a little bit of everything for the ranch including teaching riders to jump, work cattle, trail ride, pack, drill ride, parade ride and just plain learn how to sit on a horse!

“From an instructor’s perspective, he is a breath of fresh air,” says Living Water Horsemanship Director Teddy Franke. “Discernment is a priceless trait in a school horse and Chewy knows when to move out for the subtle cues of an advanced rider and when to remain calm amidst the drumming of young, impatient legs. Working cows, ranch roping, vaulting, jumping, harness and packing are just a few of his talents. He performs in parades and rides in the backcountry of Alaska. In short, Chewy instills trust because of his reliability, versatility, discernment and relaxed nature.”

The Volunteer of the Year is Tammi Gainer of Alliance, Ohio

Having grown up around horses, Tammi began her professional equine career in 1989 as a trail guide at a large ranch camp where she was first exposed to the world of equestrian vaulting and attended her first CHA Standard Instructor Certification Clinic. Tammi joined the instructor staff at Pegasus Farm, one of the largest therapeutic equestrian centers in the US, in the spring of 1995. While working at the Farm part-time and home schooling her three children, Tammi also spent much time working under several trainers in both reining and dressage and achieved NARHA instructor certification. In 2000, she achieved CHA Master Level Instructor and clinic staff status and has since earned CI status in the IRD and Vaulting programs as well. In 2005 Tammi was promoted to Equestrian Director at Pegasus Farm where she now manages all aspects of the equestrian programs that include 250 plus students each week participating in areas such as horsemanship, driving, vaulting, veterans, and work programs.

An active committee member and board member, Tammi is always willing to lend a hand at CHA regional and international conferences and has put together the CHA Regional Directors binder as well as updated the IRD and Vaulting Coach certifications. Tammi has been attending Equine Affaires and working the CHA booth there for many years and is the current Secretary for our board.

TEAM CHA Horse Connections Rewards Winner – Jenny Sdrenka of Cape Coral, Florida

TEAM CHA is the youth arm of CHA and the Horse Connections Rewards program awards youth that turn in hours of working with horses, taking riding lessons and learning about horses. This year’s winner is Jenny Catherine Sdrenka of Cape Coral, Florida who owns AQHA gelding The Rockin’ Doc, or Doc for short. Jenny is 11 years old and in sixth grade and loves to ride hunter pleasure, jump, go bareback, and do everything that is fun to do on horseback! Jenny has been a part of TEAM CHA for two years and is excited to keep being in TEAM CHA until she turns 16 and can attend a clinic to gain her Assistant Riding Instructor certification. Congratulations!

I spend a lot of my time throughout the year giving advice to horse owners through the Internet and in person at expos, but in both cases I don’t get to see the horse. Seeing things from the horse’s point of view always makes it easier for me to help the rider. Clinics are a more intimate venue and I enjoy getting to know people, working with many horses in one setting and the more casual atmosphere that we have at horsemanship clinics.”

Troxel Chairman to Speak at Helmet Safety Symposium

San Diego, CA – January 5, 2011 –Troxel LLC, the worldwide leader in ASTM/SEI-certified equestrian helmets, announced today that its chairman Dr. Richard Timms will be speaking at the Helmet Safety Symposium held by invitation-only this Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Wellington, Florida.

The Helmet Safety Symposium, organized by Riders4Helmets and SUCCEED®, will bring together representatives from the equestrian world to discuss the importance of wearing helmets, rider safety, helmet designs, rules and more. “The timing of the riders4helmets Helmet Safety Symposium could not be better, with the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) due to vote on proposed helmet rule changes at the USEF Annual Convention Jan. 13-17th in Louisville, Kentucky,” said Lyndsey White, co-founder of the Riders4Helmets campaign.

PONCHA SPRINGS, Colo. November/December 2010— Have you ever had an ad drop out at the last moment—or a space that didn’t sell before printing deadline? Julie Goodnight—known for her “classic skills for a natural ride” clinics, her clear communication in print, and her RFD-TV show, Horse Master with Julie Goodnight—provides a tip each month for use when you need just a little more content. Tips may be edited for style, length and content. Content is provided free of charge with attribution. Here are two new tips to help you when you’re in a layout crunch . . .

Winter Dehydration
Like people, horses will sometimes not drink adequately in very cold weather, which can lead to a chronic state of dehydration and exacerbate other more serious conditions like colic and illness. Horses should be monitored when possible for how much water they are consuming on a daily basis (automatic waterers and group pens make this difficult, if not impossible). To make sure your horses are drinking adequately in cold weather, you can add a handful of loose salt to their grain. This is a good way to stimulate thirst and to force the intake of salt. --Julie Goodnight

Defining the Half-halt
This is a term that is frequently bandied about but seldom defined. Although the term is used more frequently in English lessons, it is a technique that is used in all styles of riding. A half-halt is a momentary application of all three primary natural aids-- the seat, legs and hands, the purpose of which is to rebalance the horse and rock his weight back onto his haunches a little more. A horse naturally carries about 55% of his weight on his forehand, yet his power and athleticism comes from his hindquarters. By momentarily applying all the aids: engaging your seat bones, putting leg on the horse and at the same time checking back with the reins, the horse will rebalance himself and shift his weight back on his haunches. A half-halt might be executed to slow a horse down, shorten or lengthen his stride, collect him or prepare him for a more difficult maneuver like a flying lead change. --Julie Goodnight

Springfield, MA, on November 11th, 12th, and 13th. Bring Your Horse with You to the 2010 Equine Affaire
to “Ride With The Best”

W. Springfield, MA, November 11–14, 2010—Equine Affaire will return to the Eastern States Exposition in W. Talented Horse & Rider Teams to Compete for $5500
at Equine Affaire’s Versatile Horse & Rider Competition

W. SPRINGFIELD, MA, November 12–14, 2010—Now in its fourth year, Equine Affaire’s signature horsemanship event, the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition, will take place November 12th through the 14th at the Eastern States Exposition in W. Springfield, MA. Thirty pre-selected horse and rider teams will compete for the title of “Versatile Horse & Rider Competition Champion” and $5500 in cash and other prizes in this timed and judged race through an obstacle course designed to test communication between horse and rider and the horsemanship skills and athleticism of each team. Over the past few years the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition has quickly become one of the most popular features of Equine Affaire. Throughout both the qualifying rounds and finals of the competition, crowds cheer on their favorite contestants as they negotiate the challenging obstacle course at top speeds and are pushed out of their “comfort zones.”

The 2010 Versatile Horse & Rider Competition will be conducted within the 95’ x 200’ horse show arena in the Eastern States Exposition coliseum and will have a Pony Express theme. As in the past, the course will feature a combination of some traditional as well as “not-so-traditional” trail obstacles and riding challenges such as jumping over or through components, backing through a pattern, pole bending and/or roll backs, various gymkhana games, working gates, and riding over or through difficult/spooky objects. Aaron Ralston of Silt, CO, will serve as the judge for this year’s competition, and Julie Goodnight of Salida, CO, will provide enlightening and entertaining commentary for the audience.

During the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition, the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for both quality of horsemanship and timing. For each obstacle, the judge will award performance points on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the rider’s horsemanship, the horse’s attitude, and the team’s overall performance. Horses and riders will be required to complete each obstacle within 30 seconds in order to receive points. If an obstacle is not completed within the given timeframe, the contestant will be flagged and must move on to the next obstacle. Times will be translated into points, and the team with the highest overall point score will be the 2010 Versatile Horse & Rider Competition Champion.

A maximum of 30 horse/rider teams will be selected to participate in the race. Qualifying rounds will be conducted on Friday and Saturday afternoons, and the top 10 horse and rider teams in these rounds will advance to the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition Finals on Sunday morning. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four contestants with the first place team receiving $2,500 and the title of Versatile Horse & Rider Competition Champion and the second, third, and fourth place teams receiving $1,750, $1000, and $250 respectively. Additional prizes will be announced prior to the event, and all prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the Finals on Sunday morning.

Equine Affaire’s Versatile Horse & Rider Competition will be open to all riders age 18 years and older and horses of all breeds and disciplines. All horse and rider teams will compete against each other; there will be no “divisions” based on gender or age. The entry fee for each horse/rider team is $350 and includes stabling on Thursday through Saturday nights and a four-day ticket to Equine Affaire for the rider. Individual riders may compete with more than one horse in the race, but they must submit a separate application, video, and fee for each horse they wish to enter. Applications and support materials will be accepted by Equine Affaire through September 3rd; they will be reviewed by the management of Equine Affaire, which will select the final contestants for the competition and notify contestants by October 1st. Horse & Dog Enthusiasts “Go the Distance” to Attend 2010 Horse Expo

Western States Horse Expo provided fans with the ultimate equine experience on June 11-13, 2010 in Sacramento, California. Featuring brand new events and an all-star clinician line-up, Horse Expo delivered a “dog gone” good time to every attendee.

Making its debut in 2010, the Dogs Expo gave expo visitors the opportunity to watch man's best friend in a variety of demos and clinics including a Splash Dogs dock jumping competition. For the more traditional equine expo goers, two new events were added including the HELP Rescue Me Trainer Showcase and the Alltech Equestrian Extravaganza.
Featuring rescued horses and local horse trainers in a variety of disciplines, the Trainers Showcase included four categories: “Ground Me” (yearlings), “Greenie” (horses with some level of previous handling) and “Elite”(horses with little to no previous handling. As a result of hard work and dedication by both the Grace Foundation and the competing trainers, 70% of the horses involved were adopted.

Inspired by the 2010 World Equestrian Games being held in the United States, Horse Expo dreamed up an event that would feature the eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the Federation Equestrian International (FEI). The Alltech Equestrian Extravaganza displayed expert horseman demonstrating dressage, jumping, reining, eventing, para dressage, driving, vaulting and endurance. In between disciplines, the California Cowgirls dropped jaws in their fast paced drill routine, dogs gave a break from the horses.

Returning Horse Expo events included the Magnificent 7 and Western States Horse Expo Horse Sale. Capturing first place in the Magnificent 7 on Olena Oak, Ron Emmons also won second place on Matt Dillion Dun It. Competing in four events including herd work, rein work, steer stopping and fence work, the riders and horses were as face paced and fierce as ever.

Containing the nation's best bloodlines, the Horse Sale featured 112 outstanding horses. The highest seller, Dual Reys Angel, went for an impressive $24,500. A five-year-old mare by Dual Rey, her dam is a full sister to Peptoboonsmall. Bred to One Time PeptoFancy, this all-in-one package is due for a February foal.

Led by riders4helmets, Troxel to Offer Largest Sale Event of the Year

San Diego, CA – June 25, 2010 – Troxel LLC, the worldwide leader in ASTM/SEI-certified equestrian helmets, is delighted to announce their support and participation in the first National Helmet Awareness Day, to be held on July 10, 2010.

As part of their participation in this nationwide campaign to provide information to equestrians on the benefits of wearing a helmet, Troxel is extending a minimum15% off discount on helmets to riders via participating retailers Nationwide on this day.

An official event to celebrate National Helmet Awareness Day will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY that will be a fun-filled educational event, featuring experts in safety and leading equestrians. “You don’t physically have to attend the event at the Kentucky Horse Park to participate in Helmet Awareness Day,” said Jeri Bryant, co-founder of the riders4helmets campaign. “You can participate just by wearing a helmet on July 10th, no matter whether you are trail riding, showing or competing.”

“Since Troxel developed the first ASTM/SEI certified helmet in 1992, I have spoken to many riders who have chosen to wear helmets, reducing potential head injuries by up to 80%,” said Timms. “I have also experienced heart-wrenching moments of severe injury and death, with head injury accounting for 60% of equestrian deaths. Not all, but most deaths and injuries can be prevented by wearing a helmet.”
