A Great Year for 1.8 Million Equines

In 2015 the Brooke reached a record 1.8 Million Equines, Benefitting 10 million People in the Developing World

LEXINGTON, Ky (December 21, 20105) For more than eight decades, the Brooke, the world's largest international equine welfare charity, has been the driving force in lessening the suffering of working equine animals all over the world.  And it’s no easy task. There are more 100 million equines in the developing world, working to support more than 600 million of the poorest people on earth.

In developing countries, motorized vehicles are not an option for the majority of the population, so it is not unusual for an entire extended family to depend on the work of a single horse or donkey for all their needs.  But even beyond the needs of individual families, there are entire communities - even entire nations – that rely on the work of these crucial and patient animals to provide economic stability.  Unfortunately, ignorance and desperation created by extreme poverty often lead equine owners to overwork, mistreat, and neglect the very animals who provide a livelihood for them. Consequently literally millions of equines are laboring through chronic pain, malnourishment, dehydration, and crippling lameness – all of which are preventable when owners receive training from the Brooke.

The Brooke provides scientifically proven, practical, sustainable solutions to enormous equine welfare challenges in the developing world. They work in communities where many people together with their animals earn less than a dollar a day. The Brooke’s programs alleviate the suffering of animals through free veterinary intervention and by training owners in better animal husbandry skills. Both animals and the people who depend on them benefit immediately and for generations to come.

Brooke USA, the American division of the Brooke, enhances and expands this vital work through fundraising to support the Brooke’s overseas programs.

In 2015 alone, thanks to Brooke staff and generous donors worldwide, the Brooke reached a record 1.8 million equines, benefitting 10 million people in across 11 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central America. With continued support from donors in the U.S., the Brooke will achieve its goal of reaching an additional 2 million equines benefitting 12 million people in 2016.

Brooke USA is a 501(c)(3) charity located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, which exists solely to support the overseas work of the Brooke – the world’s largest international equine welfare charity. The Brooke was founded by Dorothy Brooke in 1934.  As the wife of a British Major General stationed in Cairo, Mrs. Brooke began a free veterinary clinic there after seeing the deplorable conditions of the British war horses who had been left behind in Egypt after WWI by the military and virtually sold into hard labor. The Brooke has expanded over the last 81 years to assist millions of working equines, benefitting millions of people who depend on them in the world’s poorest communities.  The Brooke is currently working in Egypt, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nepal, Senegal, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico.

Getting Your Horse In Shape For Long Rides

While it's difficult to ride regularly during the busy workweek, it's important to avoid riding your horse hard only on the weekends. This can lead to a sore, stiff horse. It's much better to find a conditioning routine that fits your schedule and gets your horse in shape.

A horse in average condition can usually handle a one- to two-hour trail ride on the weekends without too much stress. But for longer rides you need to plan ahead and start a conditioning routine.

Your horse needs to become "hardened" to the saddle, tack, saddlebags, and your weight.

Like breaking in a new pair of shoes, your horse will need time to get re-acclimated to the rub and feel of the saddle, breastcollar, and cinch. It's not painful, but there's some toughening that takes place.

When my horses are in conditioning programs, I like to think of ways I can boost my fitness, too. If you start walking, jogging, dancing, and just plain moving more, you'll feel much better after the daylong rides, too.

Schedule at least 90 calendar days of conditioning before your first big daylong ride.

It usually takes 30 calendar days of a conditioning program before you'll see physical changes in your horse. At that time, you can see how he's looking and feeling, and raise your training goals.

"I tested dozens of samples before choosing the high quality marine rope for my halters, to give the horse the right amount of pressure and comfort,” Goodnight says.  "The diameter and the knot placements makes it effective for groundwork, while being comfortable enough for everyday use. My rope products are hand-made in the USA by skilled crafts-people, which is important to me, and the quality is evident in the fit, the splices and the braided nosebands. Each of my five horses is a different color and they each sport their own halter from my rope halter color collection!
